DevOps Engineering for Minecraft

👋, I'm MCMDEV.

I'm a semi-retired Minecraft technical guy who is currently employed by a large German IT company as a Platforms Engineer. I used to do all sorts of technical work (development, sysadmin, technical lead, pretty much everything else) on some Minecraft servers, of which some were very successful (NeruxVace, which is long dead now but had around 5k concurrent players about ten years ago) and some are small but just exceptionally well-made (such as JustChunks).

I offer free education and consultation on integrating modern software development methodology into Minecraft server development in a sensible way.
Specifically, I focus on:

  • Versioning plugin configuration and other server files
  • Automatic releases by using CI/CD
  • Containerisation

For some more complex projects, these topics could also be interesting:

  • Infrastructure as Code using Terraform
  • Deployment in Kubernetes

My passion is educating others and coming up with the best possible solution for complex technical problems. Given my well-paying job and limited spare time, I have little interest in commercial Minecraft services nowadays.

Delivered work

As stated by this person.

  • Lead Developer

    2021

    For NeruxVace

NeruxVace, a German mini-games network with a few thousand players at peak hours, was the most successful project I contributed to. I joined NeruxVace in 2020 and was promoted to lead developer sometime in 2021. Some notable mini-games were their flagship BedWars game with a large competitive community and PServer, which allowed players to create their own SMPs with a set of premade plugins.

  • Game Developer

    2022

    For JustChunks

JustChunks is still around and remains one of my favorite Minecraft projects. This project was in development for almost a decade and was released only in 2022. The staff members were some of the most capable people I've ever met and have an undying motivation to continue working on their project, regardless of popularity.

  • Lead Developer

    2022

    For WestSurvival

I don't really remember much about WestSurvival. I only remember that the server didn't last long because of bad ownership decisions. Nevertheless, the server itself was still pretty popular, and my work wasn't bad either, so I figured it was worth being mentioned.

  • General Manager

    2023

    For ClassicSurvival

I kind of accidentally slipped into a technical management position at ClassicSurvival when the server was revived. ClassicSurvival was very popular a few years ago, and the owners decided to bring it back. A few friends of mine used to play it, and when I heard about the release, I offered my assistance.

  • Founder

    2024

    For Newcoming

Newcoming is a Minecraft roleplay server co-founded by some friends and me. I did the initial server setup and development but left the project shortly after release. The server has been fairly successful, but I do not wish to claim that I had anything to do with that. just thought it was worth mentioning.

    For Chunkful

Chunkful is my very own Minecraft server. It's a successor to ClassicSurvival, having learned from its mistakes.

    For VanillaX

I joined the VanillaX project as a developer shortly after it was publicly announced and was heavily involved in early development.
